2012 Elddis Xplore 304
  • Sep 13 2011 2:30PM Hywel Williams

We purchased our Xplore 304 in July 2011 and are very pleased overall. Perfect for caravanning with our three year old son. Build quality is sound.

The clever 304 layout does a great job of making the best use of available space, based around the L-shaped lounge which works well. It represents an excellent compromise between sacrificing some space for towability, since we intend to use it for many long weekends throughout the year and did not want a big caravan which might be a burden to tow and manoeuvre. Most people would be happy without a motor mover, for example.

The 304 would accommodate four people, but the weight restriction on the top bunk means that the fourth person needs to be under 11 stone and both bunk bed users under 5' 10'' for comfort.

    We particularly like:
    * The blown air heater unit mounted underneath the caravan which is powerful and saves on space. Quiet enough to use at night on lowest setting.

    * The large fridge, placed where a heater would be in a "conventional" layout.

    * The two seating areas, remarkable in a compact caravan such as this.

Towing is effortless, even through recent very windy weather. We are averaging a pleasing 28-30 mpg towing with a 2.0 litre petrol RAV4 which returns around 37 mpg solo.

I would have awarded the Xplore 304 5 stars, but for the poor quality documentation. The 304 was not covered in the Xplore 2011 manual in our pack, and I had to call our dealer just to find out what the tyre pressures should be - a basic safety issue. I have asked Elddis for a manual which does cover the 2011 304, and have been told that the matter is currently in the hands of the Homologation Manager.

Love this van. Perfect for our family needs. Well thought out layout. Comfortable sleeping and easy to set up. Good service from our Elddis dealer. Very pleased indeed.

Excellent Caravan for the money, however I found the folding shelf to the right of the sink unit not to my liking, it does not look like it should be there, I assume its there to place a kettle etc.on, being next to the 2 sockets, I think this could be dangerous as it could topple into the lap of anyone sitting adjacent, I have removed it for safety. The other thing is the length of the washbasin tap, why on earth is it so long. I find it difficult to place my hands beneath the water flow to rinse your hands without splashing water over the edge of the basin. All in all though, a great little Caravan. Reply from Elddis: Dear Mr Cragg, thank you for your feedback, which we have fed to our design team. We have fitted 'lift-up flap' type worktop extensions for many years now on selected caravans and they do prove a valuable addition to the kitchen space. In fact many Customers with vans that don't have these shelves often buy them to fit themselves. Please rest assured that all of our caravans are put through the most stringent of safety checks and all meet with strict NCC safety guidelines.

We have just returned from our first outing with our new Xplore 304. We are thoroughly happy with everything about the caravan. Our only puzzle was the black switch above the fridge which initially appeared to do nothing but once night fell and we wanted to use the bathroom it soon became apparent (and very handy for night time visits :-) ).

Having always been campers before the transition to this caravan was easy. We had searched for 12 months to find a caravan which we could tow behind our Peugout 207 SW. This certainly fits the bill.

The summer holidays with the Grandchildren will be great this year. We had visitors for dinner (and a nose) and seated 6 in the van to eat with no problems. There will be plenty of room for 3 of us on short breaks without the awning. The heating was very efficient and not noisy for night time.

All in all I'd like to say 'well done Elddis' you have fulfilled all our dreams with the Xplore 304.

Sunday 20th February. I saw a review of the Xplore 304 in the March issue of Camping & Caravanning and was so intrigued to read of so much being inserted in so small a space I immediately rang my local Elddis dealer to ask if they had one of these marvelous "Tardis" vans available to view - and they had.

I duly popped along to them straight away and was given the grand tour of the 304 and I must say I was very impressed with both the quality of the build and the feeling the van gave me with its very usable and logical layout and spacious feeling.

The 304 is designed for family use yet I, a single person with a very ancient and somewhat moth eaten Basset Hound, found myself preferring the layout to that normally set out in two berth caravans or even indeed the Xplore 302 which I had looked at awhile ago and rejected.

In the 304 I really liked the small corner area with its two seat & table setup which can, on site, be left permanently as an eating or work area and can also be used as a draining board which is otherwise lacking. This then leaves the lounge area as a pleasant uncluttered area during the day and an easy transition to a very comfortable bed as required. The open floor area gives a spacious feel to the van and which will undoughtedly be fully used by my basset who, being 15 years old and doing exactly as she pleases these days, continually and with great noise drags her bedding with her to various places to sleep during the night.

The toilet and shower was also nicely placed and really very easy to access and for once I found I could stand upright quite comfortably without having to crouch as I have to in quite a lot of vans [this being due to my height 6' 2"]

All in all I think Elddis have actually really succeeded in producing a 12' 'Tardis' variant of a 16' van that sleeps 4 and a van which I as a single person can also find perfect for my needs due to its extra features, not offered in the usual 2 berth vans, and because of its small size and most acceptable price.

I would mention that the Van I was looking over was fitted with the SE pack which amongst other things included alloy wheels, a door fly blind [very useful addition] and a special hitch.

Now its no good you getting all enthusiastic and rushing off to have a look at this particular very attractive accommodating big/little caravan 'cos I really liked what I had seen and the basset felt so at home she claimed the little two seat corner area as her own and went so sleep under the table - so I bought it there and then and am now counting the days to when I and my ratty old hound pick it up and go xploring.
