2012 Elddis Xplore 302

We purchased our little Elddis Xplore 302 2011 model last year without even seeing it and it was delivered in November 2010 - we love it!

We were surprised how warm the heater kept us through some of the coldest nights of the winter. It certainly is a tardis when it comes to storage as I don't think I have ever filled all the cupboard space up yet. It's easy to manoeuvre and now we have a Porch Awning it doubles the size. We found the Outdoor Revolution 250 Compact Pro fits almost perfectly but it does just touch the side window slightly but is easy to put up and strong.

We have had a few issues which have now all been sorted such as pipe connection leaking after the cold weather and not being able to drain the water system as the pipes are lower than the drainage point. The double bed is great but after pushing and pulling the cushions into place they started to come unstitched and the mirror on the bathroom cabinet broke and does not seem strong enough for the purpose. Perhaps a mirror on the door rather than a mirror on the cabinet would be better and yes the flashing light on the fire alarm is a little annoying. We found that if you open the cupboard door when you go to bed it covers it up.

Overall though we have thoroughly enjoyed the many short breaks we have had since last November and would recommend it to anyone who used to camp in a tent but now wants a little more comfort, warmth and convenience, we think it's great!

My son purchased his 2010 Xplore 302 and absolutely loves it. It is ideal as he is a motor race marshal and is taking it to the Grand Prix this year. Everybody remarks what good value for the money.

  • May 18 2011 10:28AM Denny Postings

After 40 years tenting, we've bought theElddis Xplore 302 - the best value small caravan we could find at the NEC show after looking for a few years, and we are truly delighted with this. (I really wanted a cute little TAB, but without even a loo it didn't compare!)

First expedition for 11 days with the wonderful Easter weather to a Camping and Caravan Club small site with a loo and hookup, and this superb little van was a joy to be in. Impresssive quality and great comfy bed and amazed at how much I could store. Once I got the pump deep enough managed a great shower too.

One annoyance and one question: The red flashing light on the electric panel by the bed a nuisance so have to sleep other way round; and finding it hard to buy a full size awning - the porch one cuts the window in half so might as well have a full size awning as it's so small. Any ideas please? Shame Isabella awnings too big - they make great bespoke awnings for the TAB.

Reply from Elddis: Dear Mr Postings, thank you very much for this feedback. We will take this on board and will liaise with awning suppliers to hopefully offer more choice for our Customers wishing to invest in a complementary awning.

We bought the Elddis Xplore 302 at the end of last year (2010) - a little tardis. There's more than enough room for myself, my husband and my daughter should she want to come with us. The awning allows for this. The only criticism I have is the back lights, they would not work when we first used the caravan and had to have them repaired, now over winter they would not work again. I hope to use this caravan for several years.....what happens when it is out of warrantee, will I still be having problems with the lights...oh! I agree about the bathroom door, shame they didn't alter the door first time. All in all, we love this little caravan, we are pensioners, young pensioners so look forward to a lot of use out of this lovely little caravan. Oh!..our little yorkie Poppy loves it as well....... Reply from Elddis: Thank you very much for your helpful feedback, which we will use. Please rest assured that your concerns regarding the rear light malfunction are now being looked into by the Elddis Customer Care Team.

We previously had the Xplore 452 but have changed it this year to the 302. This has enabled us to change our car to a more cost effective one. It is a great caravan and is easy to move and tow. Only a couple of snagging problems. When we first boiled the kettle where the only socket is available the steam made the wall surface go all bubbly although this is hopefully being sorted when the correct piece is sent. We had to take the caravan back for them to check the electrics due to the fuse blowing in the car. On taking the caravan back home the wheel bracket fell down causing damage to the bracket which means the caravan has to go back in again. A bit annoying when I work full time. Hope that these are only teething problems as the caravan in the main is lovely as was the previous Xplore.

My daughter and son in law bought the Autoquest 155 motorhome and love it. I bought the 302 Xplore, what a dream, it is a tardis! My son in law tows the 302 with ease, unbelievable the comments we get, people think we are promoting Elddis, or going to a show. We must send you some photos, what an eye catcher.

Message from Elddis - Hello! It's great to hear stories like this from our Customers and we're delighted that your family are avid Elddis fans! We'd love to see pictures of the Autoquest and Xplore 302 combo. You can email these to reception@elddis.co.uk marked for my attention. All the best, Rachel.

Proud owners of a 2010 xplore 302 - love it , but why does the 2010 have such an awful door to the toilet area. I see it has been rectified in the 2011 model with a normal door. (Why couldn't the designer get it right upfront !) I wonder if the 2010 model can be modified. A smaller hob / sink with more workspace would be appreciated. I really don't understand the point of the access area to the shower from the outside - won't ever be used. Don't want to sound too negative - it's a great little van.

Reply from Elddis: Thanks for your feedback, Steve. As you can see, we have made some great improvements to the Xplore range for the 2011 season - all based on Customer feedback and reviews, but unfortunately these cannot be changed retrospectively.

The 2010 Xplore 302 was one of the biggest success stories of last year. This model was unknown territory for us and was something of a gamble, but has gone on to be one of our best-sellers and a layout we hope will be with us for some time.

With regards the exterior access door to the 302's bathroom. This has proved very popular, as wet clothes and dirty shoes can be stowed directly. It also provides external access to the shower hose, which Customers use to hose down dirty walking shoes, muddy dogs etc. Customers who do not need this function can opt to delete the access door (at no charge) on factory order models.

Another update, we have used the Xplore 302 lots of times since delivery and have very little to find fault with. The main design issue we have is the shower/toilet door. The magnetic closure is both noisy and cumbersome. The improvement to the 2011 model (a solid, domestic style bathroom door) is a step in the right direction (just wish it was available for our 302 as a modification). I have watched Chris's resume for the 302 on the Caravan Channel and find the 2011 improvements to the lighting, lockers, and sink unit nice to have but not that important. The ignition on the hob is a good modification. We have since purchased a full size awning to give us more space. I have made sure we load the 302 correctly and have checked the nose weight and can confirm that the 302 tows with no problems at all without any stabiliser installed. Last weekend it got chilly at night and I can confirm that the heater is excellent. One question I have is: last weekend when making a cup of tea on top of the glass cover over the hob I noticed that there was only one rubber 'bung' supporting the front edge of the glass cover. This seems to be mechanically incorrect, should the load on the front edge of the glass cover be taken by two rubber 'bungs'?? If this is the case can you send me an extra rubber 'bung' to install on the left screw. I have taken a photo of my hob which I can send to show my concern.

Reply from Elddis: Thank you for your feedback. There is only one rubber 'damper' for the Chinchilla glass lid to the hob, which has been tested and approved - and is safely positioned away from the heat source. You should not experience any problems with this, but please contact our Customer Services team if you have any concerns. Many thanks.

Update on earlier review. We became the proud owners of our own 302 this Friday (4th June) and spent a weekend at the Northam Farm caravan site (an Elddis main agent). We had a hand-over by one of the Northam Farm team before we settled down for the weekend. We were apprehensive as we had not owned a caravan before but we now know that the 302 is excellent! We had several friends visit us over the weekend and with the L-shaped lounge you can comfortably seat four adults. The heater is very quick to warm the caravan up and did not sound that loud as other reviews have said. We had many admirers pass by our 302 and some we invited in to have a look. The general feedback was how good the internal layout is and they could see why the 302 has won many awards this year. We are home now from our first few nights away and can't wait to take the 302 out again!

  • May 27 2010 11:57AM Mrs Kate Sherras

Having had a Swift caravan for 15 years with my Husband, I unfortunately am now having to cope on my own and I therefore decided I needed something small and light and when I saw the 302 at the NEC Show it was exactly what I wanted. I used it for the first time last weekend and it was perfect, I can, if the ground is fairly flat, unhitch and push into position on my own so that is a major plus. I also found towing it with my Golf TDI was a breeze, could hardly tell it was there. I was on a Caravan Club 5 Van Site with hookup but no facilities and as it was extremely hot I did use the shower and found it to be excellent. The roof vent opened really wide so that was a plus, the bed was very comfortable, I slept very well.

I would like to have found as part of the Caravan a fly screen on the door, I was surrounded by trees and there were a lot of flies around and as the weather was extremely hot I needed to have the door open. The other thing I realised was that the oven burners do not operate on the ignitor which I thought was rather strange as the oven and grill both do so you do have to remember to take a lighter with you. Other than that I am extremely happy with my little van and hope to use it for many years to come.

  • May 18 2010 4:05PM D Smith

We bought our 302 last month (April) and are completely happy with it. As we're novices, moving up from camping and towing with a TDI Golf, this seemed the way for us to go.

As yet, we've had 2 overnight excursions. The first was problematic with the Jockey wheel dropping down on the way back (probably our inexperience, and no damage done), the second completely incident free.

In terms of the inside, the bed is firm and very comfortable, same as the bench seats. The cooker is fine, though the fridge takes time to cool down-we attached this to the mains at home to give it a head start! There is plenty of light and air in this little van and has blinds, flyscreens and curtains included on all windows and skylights.

We had the heating on during our first trip, and it is very efficient, heating this small van very quickly, and there is plenty of insulation. We haven't tried out the loo or shower yet, so cannot comment either way.

The only niggle was with the spare wheel. If you decide to go with this, it needs to be factory fitted BEFORE it's delivered. After some haggling with the dealership, we came to an arrangement. Also, there is no jack that comes with this spare, so we can't change them ourselves. In hindsight, we've got Tyrons on the tyres, we should have left the spare wheel out of the deal and paid Tyron to come out an change any wheel (~£60 for three years + cost of the new tyre).

  • Apr 18 2010 7:18PM K. Lewis

We looked at the 302 a week after the NEC show (March 6th) at a local Elddis dealers open day and ordered straight away. We are new to caravaning and can't wait to get the 302 (sometime in May). I have searched the internet for information on caravaning and have folowed the on-going trial on the Caravan Channel, everything seems to be satisfactory. While we wait for the delivery of the 302 perhaps Elddis could up date the website as the download owners manual does not cover the 302. Note from Elddis: Thank you for choosing your new Elddis Xplore 302. A full Customer information pack, including the instructions and warranty certificate for your Whale underfloor heating system will be supplied on delivery. Full technical specifications can be found by product on this website. Please contact us with any specific enquiries you may have.

This caravan is a little gem - I saw one for the first time this weekend and was so taken with it I bought one to replace my Freedom Jetstream! The build qulaity of the 302 is far superior to the Freedom and the design is very innovative. The low weight means easy, and economical towing with a modest vehicle. Headroom is great and the washroom is perfect for people like me who like basic sites. Fantastic to see such a great product built in the UK. Well done Elddis. You have a winner here.

  • Jan 17 2010 2:36PM Barry Garbutt

Looks to be exactly what I'm looking for as a first time buyer moving up from tenting.
Haven't seen it 'In the flesh' as yet, looking forward to viewing it at the NEC next month.
Only comment so far from seeing a video review on the Caravan Channel (and on U-tube) is that the table appears too big - you could not get into the fridge with the table in position. Could there be a smaller table option? After all the idea of buying a 2 berth van is that there are only 2 of you at meal times, so don't need to lay the table for a dinner party !
Other than that, it looks a winner and I won't need to change my small car to tow it around.
