You're Hired - Explore the Real Apprentice
Elddis has been awarded for creating pathways into manufacturing work for local youngsters. The company has won acclaim from Derwentside College through supporting the Neighbourhood Renewal Funding (NRF) programme, and employing and training three young apprentices.
Elddis employs the apprentices, aged between 16 and 20 as trainee electricians, joiners, gas fitters and maintenance fitters. Through their network of support, including mentors and one-to-one training, Elddis aim to turn the apprentices into manufacturers of the future.
Albert Croney, Acting Principal and Chief Executive of Derwentside College said: "Companies like Elddis are the backbone of initiatives such as this. Their support provides a future for youngsters and strengthens the economic prosperity of communities. We are delighted to award them for this.”
The NRF provides funding to Local Authorities, other agencies and communities to work together to improve the overall quality of life for people living together in areas of high unemployment or lack of education for instance.
Gary Jones, Senior Process Manager at Elddis, believes this initiative is an incredibly rewarding one, for businesses, communities and individuals alike.
He said: "Our apprentices form part of the lifeblood of our business. The apprentice programme ensures we recruit and grow motivated individuals to high skill levels, which embrace the corporate culture and values from the outset.
"Most apprentices come from the nearby area so we are keen to support local youngsters in developing skills and giving them opportunities in the future.”
Derwentside College is a beneficiary of NRF Funding, which means that it can provide bespoke training to its apprentices, in order to provide companies with experienced, knowledgeable and committed team workers.
Brian Softley, age 17, apprentice electrician said: "I am in my first year as an apprentice and am really enjoying it. The apprenticeship gives me a real insight into how the company and manufacturing industry operates—and it is hands on training that provides me with long-term career prospects.”
